What to Expect After Lip Filler

September 24, 2025

Lip fillers are one of the most popular aesthetic treatments today, offering fuller, plumper lips with minimal downtime. At Ziba Medical Aesthetics, we want our clients to feel confident not only during their procedure but also in knowing what to expect afterwards. While lip fillers are quick and minimally invasive, the healing process requires a little care to ensure the best results.

Here’s what you should know about recovery and 10 aftercare tips to follow.

Immediate After Effects

Right after your procedure, you’ll likely notice swelling, tenderness, and possibly minor bruising around the lips. These side effects are completely normal and usually fade within a few days. You’ll also see an immediate boost in volume, but keep in mind that once swelling subsides, your lips may look slightly less full. It usually takes about four weeks for the filler to completely settle and reveal its final, natural-looking shape.

10 Lip Filler Aftercare Tips

  1. Use Ice Packs – Apply an ice pack or ice cube wrapped in a thin cloth to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  2. Hydrate Well – Drink plenty of water to help your body heal.
  3. Eat Smart – Load up on water-rich fruits and vegetables and avoid excess salt, which can worsen swelling.
  4. Skip Strenuous Exercise – Avoid heavy workouts for 24–48 hours since raised blood pressure can increase bruising.
  5. Avoid Heat – Stay away from saunas, hot yoga, or steam rooms for at least two days. Heat can make swelling worse.
  6. Check Medications – Tylenol is generally safe, but avoid blood-thinning pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen unless advised by your doctor.
  7. Hold Off on Makeup – Don’t apply lip products for at least 24 hours.
  8. Elevate While Sleeping – Rest with your head propped up to minimize swelling.
  9. Plan Ahead – If you’re preparing for a special event, book your fillers at least two weeks before to allow for proper healing.
  10. Ask About Healing Creams – Some patients benefit from arnica, vitamin K, or aloe vera creams, but always confirm with your provider before use.

What to Avoid

Along with the aftercare steps above, it’s best to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after your procedure. Alcohol thins the blood, which increases the chance of bruising and prolongs swelling. Flying should also be postponed for about a week, as changes in cabin pressure can aggravate swelling and discomfort.

How Long Do Results Last?

Lip filler results typically last about six months, though this can vary depending on your metabolism and lifestyle. Regular maintenance appointments are the best way to keep your lips looking their best.

When to Contact Your Provider

Mild swelling, redness, and tenderness are common, but you should reach out to your provider if you experience:

  • Severe or prolonged swelling lasting more than a week
  • Intense pain or changes in skin color
  • Lumps, bumps, or unusual reactions

At Ziba Medical Aesthetics, your safety is our top priority. We’ll always ensure you’re fully informed and comfortable before, during, and after your treatment.
